Don't forget there are those that are less fortunate than ourselves...and that doesn't always mean the homeless, although food banks are really low right now and need contributions.

Animal Shelters can also use a little help. And if you are thinking of getting a new pet for your family for Christmas, PLEASE go to a shelter and not a pet store!

This link will take you to a 'Wish List' page of my local shelter. I imagine that almost all animal shelters would need the same stuff on the list...just when it comes to food and kitty litter check with them to make sure you get the right kind...they don't like to have a mixture...especially when it comes to food. It's the little things you forget they might need...paper towels, toys, office supplies, dish soap, trash bags...Keep them in mind when you see items like that on sale at the store...

Our troops are over there in Iraq and don't have the comforts we take for granted.
I found so many websites...but please let me know if you know of one I miss...I could probably do a few posts alone just on this topic...and I might.-

Adopt a Soldier...
"When I get a box (or anyone else gets a box) its hard to describe. You find a nice quiet corner and everyone knows not to bother you. You sit there and look over the box as if you had never seen anything like it before. You read who it's from, and a smile crosses your face--you recognize the name. You might already know what's inside, but it does not matter. Some tear it open as fast as they can, others take their time and enjoy every second of it. Once inside, you go through it, every little item once, twice, sometimes three times. It's a very delicate process. You breathe it in and you think of the person who sent it to you. You think of home, family, cars, summer--everything all at once. And for a very short time, you are there away from this SH*T hole. You are grateful. Then you look around and there's always a buddy who is down or having a bad day. You share your box--sometimes just with the one guy, sometimes with everyone--and it's electric. Everyone catches that feeling, and we start talking about home, about things we miss, things we are going to do when we get back, and the heaviness of the day lifts and it's not so bad.
...It's not the "things" that are sent that matter to us, it's the thought. That's the power ALL of you have who take the time to send things. You can change the worst day into the best day, in a split second." - MP in Iraq

Good Dinner...and leftovers!!!
So I've got to pat myself on the back for a moment. Last night I made a spectacular dinner.
Rosemary Syrah Chicken w/ Saffron Risotto
Really it sounds so much more complicated than it really is...
First of all...the risotto is from a bag...so all I had to do is boil water and put a little butter in it.
But...the chicken...oh the chicken...it was SO good.
I thawed some chicken breast tenders and cut it into bite size pieces (while being picky and trimming all fat and tendon junk). So the chicken pieces are sitting there in a bowl and I think...I need to do something to this...I can't just saute up the chicken without anything! We had opened a bottle of Syrah from our favorite winery on Sunday...and didn't like it. Well...it's just too young, it needs to age like FIVE years. So anyway, we have this open wine in the fridge but probably won't drink it...buuuut....I pour some in the chicken bowl...just enough to coat all the pieces not to drown it. I sprinkle some garlic salt (too lazy to chop or press some garlic last night), some basil, and finally some Rosemary. And then I sauteed it in olive oil...and that's it.
The veggies were Green Giant steamer packs (highly recommend those btw)!
EASY dinner...and I'm telling you...the chicken is TO DIE FOR!
I had higher hopes for the risotto than results but it's not bad.
I'm eating the leftovers for lunch right now. :)

Get to know you...Christmas Edition...
From Randi’s Blog…
Welcome to the CHRISTMAS edition of getting to know your friends . Okay, here's what you're supposed to do, and try not to be a SCROOGE!!! Just copy (not forward) this entire email and paste into a new e-mail (blog post) that you can send. Change all the answers so that they apply to you. Then send this to a whole bunch of people you know, remember to sent it back to the person who sent it to you!
1. Wrapping Paper or Gift Bags?
Wrapping Paper…matching my Christmas tree…and all ‘Martha Stewart’-ized..oh yea…
2. Real Tree or Artificial?
Either really…I like the look and smell of a real tree but the ease of an artificial, but we don’t HAVE an artificial…so we go real…they’re cheaper.
3. When do your put up your tree?
Usually about the second week in December or so…we like to get at least 3 weeks out of it. But we got out our decorations and I’m ready NOW so probably sooner
4. When do you take down your tree?
Definitely not until after New Years…then whenever we feel like it or we think it might catch on fire if we turn the lights on
5. Do you like/drink eggnog?
Love it…we found a new concoction this year…a little rum AND a little amaretto
6. Favorite gift received as a child?
Probably a Barbie of some kind…or my big electronic keyboard
7. Hardest person to buy a gift for?
my dad…we’re not all that close so it’s REALLY hard…this year is easy though, he got married in June and will get an album of photos I took. No…I’m not worried he’ll see this. He doesn’t do computers
8. Easiest person to buy a gift for?
my step dad…I just understand what he likes…it’s easy for me. Although if it’s not a book or movie then it’s a little tough. My mom isn’t hard either. Rob either, well…sometimes…this year I have no clue. I like to get things that aren’t on ‘the list’ but I know he’ll like…not sure I can do that this year…might be all list.
9. Do you own or display a nativity scene?
Don’t have one
10. Do you US Mail or E-Mail Christmas Cards?
snail mail…oh yea…should probably get those.
11. Worst gift you have ever received?
hmmm…probably a shirt from grandma with cats on it or something…sorry grandma. It’s funny, my grandparents always get me (or my husband and I) one kick ass gift that we’re surprised about and then there’s the ‘wah wah wah’ gift too. It’s great!
12. Favorite Holiday Movie?
elf (I watched it yesterday!)
13. When do you start Holiday Shopping?
usually anytime from September on…
14. Have you ever re-gifted a gift?
Um, maybe…maybe for a white elephant thing but I can’t really think of anything specific
15. Favorite food to eat at Christmas?
desserts!!! Actually I just love all the munchies!
16. Favorite Christmas song?
this changes…I really love the classic ones…sung by Sinatra etc. Hmmm…I do have a soft spot for Silent Night and O Holy Night. In fact, the very last song of my very last Purdue Christmas Show was Silent Night (always is)…but I had a solo. It meant a lot to me. I’m going to try to get that from the DVD and put it on YouTube to share…anyone know the best way to do that?
17. Celebrate on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
Depends on everyone’s schedules…mostly his mom and sister…both work on holidays just depends which ones…so it could go either way.
18. Christmas at Home or Travel?
That just depends too…this year will probably be ‘travel’ since we both managed to get a week off so we’ll probably stay up north the whole time.
19. Can you name all the reindeers?
I’ve sung about them for years and years…so YES! I can even tell you the ‘redneck reindeer’s’ name…it’s Leroy
20. Tree Topper Angel or Star?
Star
21. Open gifts Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
Depends
22. Most annoying thing about the Holiday Season?
the bell ringers…I know it’s charity and all…but they really need to use jingle bells instead of that damn annoying bell! And greed. Your child will not die if they don’t get the newest super cool toy of the century. Don’t get in a fight about it ya friggin’ Scrooge! OH THAT TOO! Nasty curmudgeney people around the holidays…is there a reindeer up your butt or what?!?! MERRY Christmas…sheesh
23. What special item do you want this season?
I’ll be grateful for everything and anything. No special one thing this year.
24. Gifts or Gift Cards?
Both…I appreciate the gifts and I have a wish list so people don’t have to do the gift card thing but the gift cards are always appreciated too!
25. Christmas Dinner…turkey, ham, or something else?
I always loved having Cornish hens but a glazed ham makes the best leftover sandwiches!!!

Why? Why do companies do this?!!?
At-a-glance...I mean...seriously. Is a sticker almost the size of the cover necessary to show the pages of the book that I can simply OPEN and see for myself?
And if you are so compelled to plaster the sticker on the front...can you look into some stickers that are at least easier to remove? Because I don't care how badly you want us to keep that sticker on the front, we're going to take it off...or TRY to.

The categories in the 'girls-apparel-girls' section are: Cute, Cute, Cute!, Yummy Goods, Asian Inspiration, Punk Rock Sass and some others. Yes, it takes a certain personality for some of the items but I personally love it...or...can at least appreciate it!
Here are some ideas...
Arm Warmers - I totally want these, I'm adding them to my Amazon Wish List!

Sable Memorial...
It's been just over three weeks. I still have some moments when I really, really miss her. In fact, Friday night was a rough night...but I know that will happen.
Anyway, I've been meaning to post what we were given by the emergency clinic for her...
They sent a sympathy card right away and with her ashes we received a wooden boxwith a paw print on the top to keep her in, some flower seeds to plant, and also impressions of her paws in a ceramic disk with her name on it. I thought that was very nice.
I also bought a photo charm bracelet so I can see her all the time.

The new little one...
Introducing Nyx!
Her name is Greek for 'night' and Nyx is also the Greek goddess of the night!
I can't wait to take pictures during the day with some natural light so I don't get that wash out with the flash. I have a large strobe, but I hate it. It's good for like 10 minutes then it's drained the batteries. Too cheap. Anyway...I prefer natural light anyway.
I want some good pictures of her eyes, they are amber on the outside and green toward the center, very cool!

I think this is my favorite pic...the expression she has is so...weird. Almost like she's 'put out' for some reason and pouting (which she does do).
Those are the claws she got me with!
She has a BIG thing for licking!!!
I love this...it looks like she just burped or something!
Nyx just hissed at Zeus at first...this is him just patiently watching her from a distance. He was sweet. Isn't he a fatty?!?! He can't help it though. He has to take a catabolic steroid (the kind that makes you fat not muscular) for his heart condition.
Zeus & Nyx started to play this morning!

Keith Olbermann on Prop 8...AMEN!
This is EXACTLY how I feel, except I DO know plenty of gay people including in my extended family.
I don't get any kind of prejudice. I just don't get it.
I find that people who are against gay marriage don't know a single person that is gay OR, really, don't have any friends or family that are. My bet is they do...but that person knows how they feel and is afraid to tell them.

Meet the new family member...
It's the best pic I can give you right now, it's just from my phone and we don't even have her yet!!
The shelter named her 'Raven', we don't think we'll keep that name and it's a debate now on what to name her. We have a long list of potentials, but we like to gauge the personality before setting it in stone.
We actually visited the shelter twice on Saturday. You can only have a 'face to face' visit with 2 animals per visit. But we wanted to visit with more than two, plus after the first two kittens I knew we needed more time because I just didn't "feel it" with them. Don't get me wrong, they were adorable and I'd take them, but I wanted "that thing". I also became very overwhelmed by the number of cats there and all the begging eyes and outreaching paws....it was heartbreaking!!! I literally cried almost all the way back home! So after I gathered myself we went back to look at this little one. She's a 5 month old stray. We took her into the visiting room and she crawled around a bit, then I picked her up to hold her and she just snuggled into the tiniest little ball in my arm and hid her head in my hand. It was so sweet, I think the echo in the room was freaking her out a little. But that was it...she had me.
AGAIN Rob picked the pet. He says "I have a knack for picking them but you have a knack for naming them". So we'll see where we end up.
I'm really liking Nyx at the moment. Nyx is the Greek goddess of the night, and also Greek for "night". So I think it's perfect. But I also like Chloe, Isis, Jinx, Elsa, Elli....there are many more.

Ok sinuses...take five...seriously...
I'm so over my sinuses right now. I thought it was just a headache as usual for a while but now I know it's my sinuses causing them.
I don't get the whole sniffly, clogged, mucus thing...I just get sinus pain. We're talking across the forhead, behind the eyes, in the jaw, in the ears, kill me now kind of pain.
I take my migraine meds for some relief sometimes but it doesn't always work and I'd have to take it everyday for the duration...no thanks. I can only take my face being numb so long.

Gift Idea of the Day...
Beautiful scent diffuser...
I know, it may seem lame but this is one of those things that if you are REALLY stuck on what to get someone they will appreciate it. It's more personal than a gift card (which by the way...be careful of buying this year...find out if they plan on closing stores and/or what their policy on gift cards is if a store closes) and this one in particular is prettier than the usual ones you see in stores...just a clear glass bottle.
So while it may seem lame at first, this one is a little different. It's pretty. It's not so expensive that if they hate it and never use it again you feel like it's money wasted and if they love the design (I do!) then they can use it over and over by getting refill scents! What a deal!

Gift Idea of the Day...
I'm starting with a real winner. This one is for the ladies.
I've got one that is not collapsible but the round part turns so it has a very slim profile in my purse. I'd love a collapsible one.
-
Trust me...every woman will love this...even if they aren't so sure at first.
Price: $13.75 (shown); depending on style $7-$25
-
These come in so many different designs and styles, just google purse hanger and you'll get tons of hits.
But the link is, of course, to Amazon.com.
-
The one shown is a collapsible one...which is way cool because then it doesn't take up a ton of room in your purse! These are great because obviously they keep your purse off of the dirty floors. I get compliments EVERY time I use it. Even from males saying it's a great idea for their mom girlfriend.

The wonderful Amazon Wish List...
So now's the time that I share little gift ideas daily (or close to daily) as Christmas fast approaches. We all have those people that are hard to shop for, hopefully this will help!
But first...the wonders of the Amazon Wish List must be shared!!!
When people ask me what I want for Christmas (or birthday or whatever...) I just say..."check my Amazon Wish List". Have you ever noticed that when you're put on the spot to come up with something you want, you forget all the cool stuff you want? This saves me from having to remember everything too! And if you have qualms about buying anything over the internet and/or you'd just rather buy from a store in person...you don't HAVE to buy it on Amazon...it's a LIST, with pictures and prices even! And it is awfully convenient! I don't go to the stores to buy Christmas gifts anymore unless I have to. Plus, I'm finding stuff cheaper on Amazon than in the store, yes, there's shipping, but many items are still cheaper or at least ends up being the same price and it comes to me instead of me going to find it. And if you're uber-lazy you can get it gift wrapped.
So...here is a little lesson on how EASY it is!!
On the homepage for Amazon, there's a little toolbar across the top. There you'll see "Gifts & Wish Lists", click on it.
It will pop out and you can search for someone's wish list.
Just type in their name.
Voila! You have their wish list. Don't worry if you think that if you buy it from their wish list that they'll find out what they're getting. If they want to spoil it for themselves, so be it. I, however, like the surprise and avoid studying my list during December. Amazon also has this covered so I don't have to worry about it. In 'wish list preferences', I can set it so I won't find out.
Here's the description direct from Amazon:
Cool eh?
Amazon.com also now lets you add items from other websites to your amazon wish list and will supply photo and link to that item. It's called the "Universal Wish List Button". It's fabulous!
So! I highly recommend setting up an Amazon Wish List if only to have a place to store a wish list with a description, photo, price and allow others to buy it there.
Thus starts my gift idea of the day...your list.
Now get started!!!

When their list comes up, it will come up with the most recently added item first. BUT...this is important...sort by PRIORITY! (and then hit 'go' to regenerate the list).
The most recent thing they added may not be the thing they want most. Some people may not use the priorities but I certainly do. There's lowest, low, medium, high, and highest.Voila!
When a special occasion is coming up, an important part of receiving gifts is the anticipation and surprise. That's why you can now have your Wish List remember holidays and your birthday. Select any of the events below, and we'll make it so you won't see whether anyone has bought an item from your Wish List before the big day. Everyone loves a surprise!
Here's how it works: Even if someone buys you an item from your Wish List, it will still appear to you as unpurchased, so the surprise won't be ruined. But you don't have to worry about getting the same gift twice — other customers will see only those items that really haven't been bought yet.
Cool eh?
Amazon.com also now lets you add items from other websites to your amazon wish list and will supply photo and link to that item. It's called the "Universal Wish List Button". It's fabulous!

I sketched the image from the picture below, you can see where I got the black spots from.
The little dot on the side represents the little black spot of fur she had on that foot. I would sometimes call her 'freckle foot' and always thought that little dot was so cute so I had to get it.
I'm very happy with it. It's on my lower back, right side.
Now she'll always be with me, besides in my heart.
