The Close of 2008...

2008 is at an end....a new year to begin...in about 6 hours.

I will take some time tomorrow to list my resolutions, for now I want to get over my SECOND cold.  If you follow me you know that I just got over something and now I have ANOTHER cold!!!  WTF?!?

Tonight we are going to be with friends to ring in the New Year.  Hopefully the DayQuil will work well into the night.

So Happy New Year everyone...don't forget to kiss someone at midnight!

On that note...Today's Favorite Thing...

Risque Sparkling Wine from Toad Hollow Winery in Healdsburg, CA (available almost anywhere)
It's a sweeter sparkling wine that everyone will love!  Plus if you don't drink it all...yea right...it comes with it's own stopper...very nice.

Apparently my meals were bowl-themed today...

Breakfast...
Fiber One cereal & Special K cereal with bananas

Lunch...
Homemade Macaroni & Cheese (leftovers) with Glazed Ham (leftovers) with a little pepperjack cheese mixed in

Dinner...
Butternut Squash & Sausage Soup (my now famous recipe)
the picture isn't as appetizing...I was so excited to eat it I forgot to take a picture BEFORE.
It's a variation of this recipe from allrecipes.com

And that soup is TODAY'S FAVORITE THING  :)

I'm a Leo...

Stealing ideas from Randi T...

Leo - Overview
Your sign is that of dramatic Leo, the fifth sign of the zodiac, and the sign of generosity and nobility. It stands for self-expression and the unfolding of the internal power principle. Generous and self-aware, you are truly king of the jungle.
I feel this is pretty accurate...although it seems like I'm not being so 'noble' saying that.  :)  But I am very self-aware and have a good sense of my internal power, power-within. I love being generous and wish I could be more so.
Leo - Ruling Planet
The Sun, defines the dominant traits of your personality and your basic character. This makes you a self-assured, magnanimous, and buoyant person who enjoys being the center of attention, and others often see you as invincible, because your courage and charisma are so impressive.
I am pretty self-confident. I do like to be the center of attention but extensively and not flaunt it. I guess I like being the 'deserved' center of attention...not so much "hey look at me!".
Leo - Element
Your sign is the second of the fire signs, which makes you a strong-willed and courageous individual, with great leadership qualities. Your aura radiates magnetism and dignity like the rays around the sun.
I am very strong-willed and have a tendency to end up in leadership roles. It's funny too that my element is fire...sometimes I feel like I have a fire in my belly and I'm constantly trying to feed it.  I'm trying to find what will satiate it.  Case in point...my hobbies...photography and about every kind of 'craft' there is out there.  What do I like most?  I don't know?!  There's the fire.
I'm also ON FIRE about things I feel strongly about, you can see it in my eyes when I talk about it.  And also very fiery if something sets me off..."you wouldn't like me when I'm angry".
Leo - House
You rule the fifth house of the horoscope, which is the section associated with pleasure, creativity, and play. This includes romance, children, gambling and speculation, hobbies, sports, fun and games. Your desire to live out your emotions is powerful, and you constantly seek new ways of self-expression.
Creative...always.  Fun & games...probably why someone last night thought I was 25 years old and not 31.  Children...eh...I don't really consider myself a 'kid person'.  I'm okay with them...but only OK. I love the last sentence...it's me exactly.
Leo - Mode
The mode of a Leo is fixed, which means that you are passive in your need for admiration, expecting others to naturally notice and approach you. You enjoy stability and comfort, and are generous in sharing it with others.
Yes...that is what I was trying to say about being the center of attention.  Stability & comfort to me mean security and that is very important to me.  (not the $ kind but that would be nice!)  I can sometimes be insecure but I think it's just the fear of the instability and the kind of change I don't want that feeds that.
Leo - Strengths
Your strengths, dear Leo, lie in your open-minded and extremely faithful nature. You tend to act as the protector of the downtrodden, and when taking sides, most often root for the underdog. In relationships, you are sincere, genuine, and trusting, because you hold high ethical standards.
I pride myself (get it pride...lion...ha!...sorry) on my open-mindednessand I do stand up for the 'little guy' or anyone being oppressed.  I love the last sentence here too but as far as trusting...I don't just give it away, it's earned first. But once it is...it's there in a big way.
Leo - Weaknesses
However, even you have weaknesses, dear Leo! At times, you have a tendency to become vain and egocentric, and get anxious and hypersensitive when you don't get the attention you want. If you are fishing for compliments and get a dissatisfying result, you compensate by displaying arrogance, and are very capable of delivering a grandiose and exaggerated performance.
Hmmm, I don't know if I agree with this.  I guess I'll have to watch myself and see if I can see that.  If I were to point out any weaknesses I'd say it's my stubborness.  Or that I can kind of obsess about an idea or something that's bothering me.  I can also be overly emotional about some things.

Is Jeff Goldblum drunk ALL the time?

No but it turns out if you slow down any clip of Jeff Goldblum to 1/2 speed he sounds drunk...seriously...eerily accurately drunk.

What do you think?

You can find many more if you search for 'drunk jeff goldblum' on YouTube.

I don't control the weather...

Ok so round 2 of Christmas was last night and it was also good.  But today is not good.

Elkhart County is under a state of emergency, only emergency vehicles are allowed out on the roads.  It rained early this morning so basically everything is coated in ice.  And my husband is taking his boredom out on me.  He's bored...therefore cranky.  The ice is not my fault.  I'm sorry you're bored but there's really nothing anyone can do about it. We have days where we do absolutely nothing...we sit on the couch and watch movies.  Why can't we just do that today?  Only because you don't have a choice have you decided to be angry at the world.  What good is that?  Alienating me will not make it better...I can promise you that.  So you'd better be in a better mood when you wake up from your nap or so help me...

We'll be here until after the New Year!

I will be on the computer a lot I'm sure but I'm not going to guarantee a blog a day.  :o)

Everyone have a wonderul and safe Christmas!

It's official...

Aside from stocking stuffers...I am DONE Christmas shopping!!!

We didn't buy for a whole lot of people this year...only 7 people.  And we took it kind of easy.  We (along with everyone) are trying to save money so we are spending less.  Plus my mom and I are doing the day after Christmas shopping thing...clothing sales!!!  Can't wait!

Oh shoot...8...I don't have my dad's gift yet.  BUT...I kinda do...it's photos from his wedding, I just need to have them printed so no big whoop.

All I have to do is wait for my packages to come (I should be a spokesperson for Amazon), pick one up from Lowe's, wrap...and done!

We will have two Christmases...three if I can connect with my dad...not even sure if he's in the state.  Anyway, one in the morning with my parents and another in the evening with his family.  Being from the same hometown has it's perks.  Of our broken families only one parent lives far away...his dad in Tennessee.  And all that's ever expected is a call.

So bring it Christmas! I'm ready.

Today's Favorite Thing...

Gift Idea of the Day...

Gift exchanges or white elephants...

What do you get for the random gift exchange or as a gift for a person that you don't know?  Maybe you're meeting them for the first time at Christmas.  Maybe it's a girls/guys gift exchange or white elephant thing.
You don't want to get anything offensive...alcohol is NOT a safe gift if you don't know the person or aren't sure.  You don't want to get anything that will go to waste either (or be re-gifted).

Anyway...here are some ideas...
Some of them may relate more as 'girl' gifts...but hey, what can I say...I'm a girl!

Holiday Spa 'Basket'

Favorite Thing of the Day...

I'm thinking I may do this after I'm done with the 'Gift Ideas of the Day'...which are getting more difficult AND will end this Friday...if you haven't gotten all your gifts by then shame on you!

I like finding the fun, strange, unusual, useful, etc things and posting them.  Some things I might have or have used...some I may just find on the internet or by recommendation...and I may repeat some through time.  But so be it.

Anyway...here's my favorite thing today...

Soft Claws for Cats
$18.95 from softclaws.com
$12-19 on Amazon.com (just search for 'soft claws')
Also available at some pet stores.
They come in a HUGE variety of colors.
They come in sizes so check which size you might need for your kitty.
I got them for our new kitty Nyx because she's still a kitten and the young'ens claws tend to be way sharper! We had her declawed in the front but the back ones could still do a number on us and the furniture so we figured...why not give it a try.  I LOVE THEM.  I can tell when she sheds them...I get scratched.  And yes, they will shed them over time because they naturally shed their nails.

To get them on, they kind of need to sit still...yea, I know.  Try to get them when they're tired.

I totally ordered some purple ones today, I think Nyx will look so cute with them!!!

Gift Ideas of the Day...

Gift Cards...

I know...BORING...right?
Well, they don't have to be boring and I want to give you some GIFT CARD tips.

-Be careful which stores you buy gift cards from...with so many going out of business if the person doesn't use the card right away...it may become worthless.  Research a little to make sure the store isn't in trouble, or even ask the clerks, but to be safe you can always get the VISA gift cards.
-VISA gift cards work a little different...you should know your balance when you use them, and if they aren't used within a year you might start to lose money.  Check it out here...
http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/gift_card_how.html
-A gift card is a good idea if you KNOW that the person wants something very specific and you are worried you'll get the wrong thing or you know they want something pretty expensive and can't afford to get it, at least it will be a chunk toward that.
-Some gift cards EXPIRE!  It's true.  Ask about it when you buy one, usually the info is on the back of the gift card too.  Most of them you don't have to worry about for a year (and you think you won't have it that long, but you might be surprised!) and some don't expire at all!!!  Like...Target, Amazon and iTunes...if you know of more please comment!  Some don't "expire" but may require a 'maintenance fee' if not used in a 1 year or even a 6 month cycle.  If you find that a card you purchase has some small strings attached, make sure the recipient knows about them!!
-You can still buy gift cards to stores even if they aren't local to you.  If you know that your sister just loves a restaurant in her area but there aren't any around you...you can still get a gift card for that place!  Look online, go to their website.  Chances are you can buy a gift card and have it sent either to you to give to them in person or send personally or they might be able to send it straight to them!!  Get creative!
-But not too creative...don't guess on a store you think they like...what if they don't?  What if they never go there or don't find anything there?  It's a nice idea for something new...but they may end up just buying 'something' just to spend the money because they don't really have a choice.  Get them something you know they'll like...stores you KNOW they go to.  OR go generic with the VISA gift card or Simon Mall card (or whatever mall company is local) so they aren't limited.

My gift card picks...
(that's some GOOD seafood!)

And...I'm done!!!

And with this click...I bid thee Christmas shoppin done!

I heart you Amazon!!
Ok, so I have a few things here and there to get...but I'd say I'm 90% done!  All in one lunch hour.  :)

Rachel Ray's Sweepstakes...

Unexpected Indiana reveals the beauty and power of the natural world in Indiana. Ron Leonetti and Christopher Jordan have covered the entire state, photographing the parks and preserves in all four seasons. From the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in the north to the cypress sloughs in the south, the full breadth of Indiana's diversity is represented, revealing a hidden splendor. Nothing manmade intrudes upon these striking photos, which range from close-ups to sweeping landscapes of forests, rivers, prairies, dunes, and swamps. Unexpected Indiana represents a unique collaboration between two photographers. Jordan and Leonetti share a deep love of nature and a fascination with the hidden gems that can be found within the state. Working in traditional medium and large film formats, the photographers have produced a spectacular body of work that captures the essence of Indiana's natural beauty.

(This actually makes me think about making my own photo book and publishing it...hmmm...)

Haunted Indianapolis
$12.11
Explore cold and shivery legends, spectral stories, and phantom folklore of Indiana's forgotten country houses, decrepit graveyards, and lonely wooded lanes. Read about the mysterious mansion of Skiles Test, and see the strange, blue, dancing orbs that beckon in the night. Stop for a drink at the Slippery Noodle Inn and catch a glimpse of spectral bootleggers and outlaws who still call the place their home. Climb the One Hundred Steps of Stepp Cemetery and plummet in a wave of terror through the brambles that surround the ancient burying place of a tormented Gypsy band. There's more than corn in Indiana; ghosts and fear stalk the fields under the nighttime sky.

I Can Has Cheezburger? A LOLcat Colleckshun

Gift Ideas of the Day...

Special gifts...

It's hard to find that meaningful, special gift.  Whether it be for your significant other, mom, sister...whatever...
Hopefully this will help a bit...

Although...admittedly...I am stuck finding that 'something special' for my husband this year.  :(

Jewelry
I know, I know....that's always the answer...it's clichΓ©...maybe...but it still works!
Lesson in shopping for jewelry...KNOW HER STYLE...it's not hard...take a peak in her jewelry box when she's not looking. Observe what she wears most often.  Sometimes guys act like it's so hard.  It really isn't.  And whether it's her style or not means less if it's truly from your heart fellas.

Heart Pendant
$50
This is really gorgeous!

Follow Your Own Star necklace
$19.99 (sale) at JCPenney

Know her birthstone...
Birthstone Ring

Zales has Birthstone Eternity Bands on sale for $29.25 and they're very cute!  They're stackable!  She could wear a birthstone band for her birthday, her husbands, and/or her children!!!
Or are you going ALL OUT?

$39 from Pottery Barn
I LOVE these!  I want one!

Oh...and NEVER pay tag price at a jewelry store (like Zales, Kay, etc)...if they aren't giving you at least half off...you're being ripped off.

Oh....I could look at jewelry all day long.  If anyone knows of any job position like "personal jewelry shopper", you just let me know.  :)

Butterfly Award...

Thank you to T from It Matters to Me for giving me this award!
It is much appreciated and I hope everyone enjoys reading as much as you do!

The rules for this award:
1. Put the logo on your blog
2. Add a link to the person who awarded you
3. Nominate 10 other blogs for this award
4. Add links to those blogs
5. Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs
6. Give a reason why you consider their blogs cool.

FIRST...I follow so many blogs (it's actually kind of ridiculous) so if you know I read your blog and you are not here...please don't be offended!  And anyone listed...if you choose not to participate...that's cool.

Liam's Alternate Reality
I just love the random questions!

A Touch of Tuesday Weld
We became e-friends quite a while ago...I just love her writing style and the fun stuff she digs up! I also quite love hearing about some of the food she makes...much more adventurous than I!

jessicahardy.org
I knew Jessica in high school and just found her blog one day...I don't even remember how...she makes me laugh and I love her honesty!

Thoughts, Randomly
We seem to be much alike.  I met her through Liam's blog one way or another and now I consider her a good e-friend as well.

Shawna Schaub Photography
Shawna and I worked together before she followed her heart to photography...and I soon (kind of) followed her.  While I am not a professional photographer and I still hold my 8 to 5 grind job, she is my photography mentor.  Not only is she a FABULOUS photographer (she did my wedding), she's a very insightful person and good friend.

Anne Ruthman Photography
Anne is an amazing photographer and although I do not know her personally, what I gather from her blog/facebook/etc is that she is so very genuine and fun to be around!!  Plus we're both obsessed with the color GREEN!

Dispatches from the Island
This is Jorge Garcia's blog...you know...Hurley on LOST.  Seriously!  He makes me laugh with every post! I do not claim to know him personally but he seems to be a fun and genuine person.  Be sure to check out his Halloween pumpkins!

Ok with the rest...I'm going to bend the rules...they're more commercial-type blogs but I really love them!  So I won't be contacting them regarding this at all.  :)

Rocktographers
Who doesn't like to look at diamonds!?!?  No really this is dedicated to cool shots of wedding rings and they're spectacular!

PostSecret
Who doesn't love a good secret?

The Storque
This is the blog for etsy.com.  I read it to (obviously) keep up but also to stimulate new ideas for myself!

So I might get him something like this...

Gift Ideas of the Day...

Feel a bit tipsy?...

Novelty...

Collection of Holiday Ales from World Market
Sorry...no price online or link
From our experience they aren't necessarily that good...but it's a good novelty gift or party topic

Electric Reindeer Wine from World Market
$7ish
White Zinfandel, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon

Christmas Wine Glasses
$20 for 4

Connoisseur...

Wine Aerator
$39
This is on my wish list!  Aerators really do work...they age the wine instantly
And this one just looks cool
Apparently this is sold in many places, just found it on crateandbarrel.com too

Vacuum Wine Stopper
$10 for the set
These are a MUST for wine drinkers...it really does preserve the wine longer...a LOT longer

Wine Chiller
$64

Wines...

Anything on my wine blog that I give a good recommendation...
Ice Wines are a treat...they are typically more expensive than 'standards' but they are worth it!
Cline wine can be found almost anywhere and I haven't been disappointed by them yet, they have a large variety of types.
Don't be afraid to ask the employees of wherever you go to buy wine their opinion.  If you know they like certain wines, tell them that...if you know they like wine but have no idea what kinds, tell them that.  They are a big help!!!

Bad day...

It would be tough to make this day any worse...while I'm absolutely sure that it could happen.

I made a tiny mistake that when multiplied...cost my company probably around $30,000.  And with this current economy that makes me look extra bad.

One little thing that was missing from a file spec...too bad they have hundreds of files...

I don't like making mistakes, I'm a perfectionist.  So I am VERY disheartened.  And upset that it had to cost SO much.
I just want to go home, go to bed, and stay under the covers.

Some days you're the dog...some days you're the cat...
Today I'm definitely the cat.

Things...

Ok...so I just tried to take a drink from my Diet Coke can before opening it...that's how awake I am today.

I'm eating turkey enchiladas made from leftover Thanksgiving turkey...and they are FABULOUS!
It's easy to make...
-get a can of enchilada sauce and pour about 2/3-3/4 of it into a saucepan
-shred up the turkey and add to the sauce and simmer
-you can add onions, green chiles, cheese whatever your pleasure to this mixture...even sour cream or cream cheese to tone down the spice -- last night my additive was cream cheese, I wanted to add green chiles but I was out
-roll up the mixture plus some cheese inside tortillas, pour the reserved sauce on top, add more cheese and bake at 400 for about 15 minutes.  I get 6 enchiladas out this usually.
Except...funny story...after getting home from work and the store I find I do NOT have canned enchilada sauce like I thought.  I'm already changed into comfies, it was freakin cold and windy, I was NOT going back out.  I decide to try something...
Yep...make my own.  Obviously not from scratch but hey...
So I take the condensed tomato soup and pour that into the saucepan, add taco seasoning (onion and jalapeno flavor to be exact), add some water to thin it out, add some garlic powder, red pepper, and tobasco.  I don't know how much of each...I just add what I want.
And you know what?...it turned out AWESOME!

A Best Buy Story...

My mother and I had a VERY unsatisfying experience at the Best Buy store in Mishawaka, IN on Saturday...

I went with my mother to help her pick out a new laptop computer. The salesperson was indeed very helpful and we finally made our decision. She started to fill out the paperwork, however, he then said that they were out of that particular laptop and rainchecks are not offered. I found that very hard to believe. I probably asked him four times, in four different ways..."even if we want THIS computer and pay for it today...we can't get it because the sale ends tonight...we'd have to pay full price?" Correct.
This is something that they should REALLY reconsider. I can't think of another store that does this. I didn't see a 'while supplies last' or anything. This is unbelievably horrible customer service and has tarnished my previously high opinion of Best Buy. My mom was more than willing to wait for it to come in if we could order it...but not after I told her it wouldn't be for the sale price. (FYI - I think it was this model - Dell - Studio Laptop with Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5800, 4GB, 320MB, battery upgrade)
To add insult to injury...it doesn't end there.
We looked around AGAIN and settled on the model that was 'one lower' than the previous model. (I believe it was this one - Studio Laptop with Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5800, 3GB, 250MB)
So we waited for all the extras to be installed and the stuff she didn't need to be taken off, etc and picked it up 2.5 hours later and took it home.
She couldn't wait to show it to my stepdad and start using it so we took it out of the box. It was the WRONG model. The sales person never double checked it when he got it out of the cabinet and we got the model even lower than that one. I was HOT!
(Model received: Dell - Inspiron Laptop with Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T3200, 3GB, 160MB)
At the very least, she paid the correct price for this model...obviously if she had paid for the higher grade model we would have been back to that store as fast as we could.

She decided to keep it, I think partially because of the hassle we had already been through. But I still felt compelled to tell you AND THEM about this very unsatisfying experience.

I've emailed my complaint...we'll see what they do or say...if anything.

My laptop at Best Buy is on sale!!!

My GREEN laptop has a great price!!!
However...I do have a Best Buy story from Saturday...not a good one.  I'll post it.
